I speak fairly regularly about how forgetful we are. We can probably say that some of us are more forgetful than others but the reality is, as people, we are forgetful. The proof, for me, is found in the fact that the first thing that Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would do when He came to dwell with them and in them was that He would remind each of them of Jesus’ words. Can you imagine forgetting something Jesus has told you? We all have these moments, these events, looks, words and feelings that seem to capture our hearts and in those moments we say “I will never forget this”, but the reality is, we forget. God knows our forgetfulness and rather than being angered, frustrated or even offended by it He instead has made provision for it. He set the rainbow in the clouds for Noah to remind us that He will never again destroy the earth by flood. He gave circumcision to Abraham as the sign of the covenant God would make, that from him God would create a great nation through which all the nations of the earth would be blessed and remember, a sign is simply a reminder. God told Joshua to set up “memorial stones” from the middle of the parted Jordan River and set them up in the place they slept for the first night in the Promised Land as a reminder that God had parted the Jordan River and brought them into the land that He had promised them. Why do we wear wedding rings? It’s not to show other people that we are married, it’s a reminder for ourselves. Each time I look at, touch or even feel my wedding ring it’s supposed to remind me that Melissa promised me her heart for the entirety of our lives; it should remind me of the vows that we each made to the other. The interesting thing about us is that we have a tendency to remember the things we wish we could forget and forget the things that are most important to remember. This morning I want us to see that God is faithful to remember. He remembers what we seem to constantly forget and at the same time He has chosen to forget what we so painfully remember. We have a tendency to remember what we’ve done but God remembers who we are. We can’t seem to forget what’s been done to us but God never lets anything other than His heart define us. I pray that we will see and understand today that God remembers from His heart, He chooses to see us as we were created rather than how we are at the moment and He never stops believing that we can be, by His grace and Jesus’ blood, redeemed into everything that He has intended and provided for us. God remembers where we come from and what we are made of, He remembers what He has done on our behalf and He never forgets His desire for us.
