In II Corinthians 5 Paul wrote “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” In I Corinthians 13 Paul wrote, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” There is an exchange that is necessary in our lives. Transformation requires, not just a change, but a willing exchange. In order for a caterpillar to become a butterfly it must cocoon itself in, exchanging life up until that moment for a new life beyond it. Transformation becomes about an exchange of values, it is created and accomplished by God but it is actually dependent upon our exchange. Jesus said “no man can serve two masters”, you can’t serve God and money. His point was not merely that you need to serve God; it was that you have served money up until this point and the only way for God to become your treasure is for your current treasure to be exchanged for Him. We are a people called to be transformed and to be agents of transformation in this community. We have been given the ministry of reconciliation and our calling is to be ambassadors of Christ, through whom He makes His call, “Be reconciled to God!” Through servanthood, prayer, worship, love and mercy we have been equipped to build bridges that unite all of the divisions in our community. We are called to unite races, denominations, neighborhoods, families, governments and anything and everything that has been divided by the lies of Satan and the shame of sin. That unity is built by humility and humility is established by an exchange of value. Contrary to popular belief, God does require something of us, not so that He can love us but in response to being loved by Him. He requires that we love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. He requires that we walk by faith and not by sight and He requires that we love each other even as He has loved us. These requirements are fulfilled in only one way, by an exchange of value. I pray that today we will see the value of Jesus and that we will make Him our one and only treasure. I pray that we will see that if Jesus is our “one thing” then everything else is lesser and must be exchanged for the joy of making Him our one and only.
