The boat ride to Bethsaida must have been a tense one. Jesus shared His heart and His concern with the disciples but they were so caught up in their current circumstances that they completely missed the point of what He was sharing. “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod” was received as some sort of rebuke for not having bread rather than the concern of Jesus’ heart. Jesus rebuked the disciples, He was not harsh but He revealed an urgency in His tone that they had not heard from them before, He needed them to not just hear Him but to listen closely, to allow their hearts and minds to be opened to His message, His identity and His purpose. The last question that Mark records during the boat ride was Jesus asking the disciples, “How is it you do not understand?” In tonight’s text we find that Mark shows us how far God goes to make Himself known and to provide for us a way to understand. First we see a miracle, the healing of a blind man, that in some ways is a parable and a prophesy of the miraculous healing of our blind hearts. Then Mark will lead us from that miracle into Jesus next questions for the disciples, the most important questions that He has ever asked up to that point, the text ends with the disciples answering Jesus question and in my opinion, comforting His heart.
