Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane set off hours of frenzy. By mid-afternoon there would be three trials, dreams of warning, multiple denials, political posturing, a feeble and failed attempt to free Jesus and then beatings, humiliations and ultimately Jesus’ death, literally all within the course of less than 18 hours. Tonight we will delve into the events of Jesus’ first trial, one that was a complete farce, held illegally in the middle of the night, hidden from the people and based on nothing but false witnesses. At the same that time Jesus was being tried falsely, Peter was enduring a trial of his own, a test of his faith, his heart and his pride. Both Jesus and Peter were being questioned at the same time, they were both being pressured to respond, to give in to the impulses and desires of the crowds that surrounded them, Jesus responded with silence and then the truth, Peter responded with loud denials and then curses and deceit. When the rooster crowd to signal the end of the night Jesus was being condemned and Peter was learning that his heart, when tested, was not at all what he had thought that it would be.
