Mark chapter 12 is a chapter of questions. Five questions are asked, two asked by Jesus and then three asked of Jesus. In tonight’s text we see the beginning of the Sanhedrin’s plans to have Jesus killed by attempting to trap Him into making statements that could either be seen as blasphemous or anti-Rome. The two questions that are asked in this text are not asked genuinely and yet they are questions that people struggled with. The beauty of Jesus’ answers in this passage is that even though the questions were asked with wrong motives Jesus still offered answers that were true, were kind and were helpful. Tonight I don’t want us to make the hearts of the Sanhedrin, the Pharisees, Herodians and Sadducees our focus, I want us to really see the heart of Jesus because I think that all of us have questions that we are unsure about asking and even a bit fearful about having in our hearts in the first place. What I want us to see tonight is that no matter where the question comes from Jesus is careful with His answers because Jesus is faithful to our hearts, He doesn’t ever long to crush us, His heart is to redeem us. Sometimes His answers are exactly what we hoped to hear and sometimes His answers seem to cut deeply because they reveal how far from His heart we are but they are always spoken in love, in truth and for the purpose of making us one with Him even as He is one with His Father.
