I believe that there are three evidences of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, three purposes that God desires to work in us and through us by filling us with Himself: unity in the church, glory to Jesus and redemption for men. Last week we talked about unity in the church, that the baptism of the Holy Spirit builds in man what God possesses in Himself, unity based on love. The baptism of the Holy Spirit has to be understood in its corporate context or else we will see it as an individual outpouring that is given to us and is to be exercised for us, but the truth of God’s Kingdom and God’s character is that everything He does is to build a people not just individual persons. God loves each of us but His desire is for all of us. He chose Abraham to build a nation and out of His love for the world He sent Jesus to build a family of adopted children, Jesus Himself is even returning for a singular church that has been purified until it is found to be without spot or blemish, wrinkles for folds. To understand God’s corporate purpose is not to reduce His love for each of us but instead to realize that the love He has for me is also he love He has for you but not just for you but for everyone, no matter who we meet, who we love, who we fear or even who we are tempted to hate, God’s love for each is governed by His love for all of us. Just as there is no competition within the Godhead there is to be no competition within those filled with the Spirit of God, we don’t have to fight for God’s love, we freely receive which means, as Jesus said, we must also freely give. We cannot rightly believe that we can be baptized in the Holy Spirit but then allow our hearts and minds to live opposed to the character of the Holy Spirit; one of the first evidences, outcomes and purposes of the baptism of the Holy Spirit must be unity in the church.  Today we will concentrate on the next evidence in our list, glory to Jesus. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would glorify Him and so we have to take that to mean that those baptized in the Holy Spirit must also glorify Jesus. The question we have to tackle today is what does it mean to glorify Him? From the very start I want us to understand that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not when He glorifies Jesus to us, that’s salvation, we come to salvation by recognizing the glorious identity of Jesus and responding to Him in repentance and faith. So being filled with or baptized in the Holy Spirit is not when we see the glory of Jesus, it is when the glory of Jesus is seen through us. Salvation is when we come to know Him, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is when we are empowered to make Him known. Today I want us to see that Jesus’ glory is about His identity, it’s about His position and it’s about our purpose. If it is God’s will as we believe Romans 8:28-29 teaches that each one of us be conformed to the image of Jesus, then God’s purpose in us becoming like Jesus is very simply so that others will see Jesus in and through us. I believe we glorify Jesus when we hail Him as king and when we live for the increase of His kingdom.
