In the last weeks we have talked about God’s pursuit, we have talked about God’s pleading, we have talked about the ministry of reconciliation and we have talked about the heart that is required to rightly deliver the message of reconciliation, today we will talk about the message itself. In Luke 6:45 Jesus said “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of his heart the mouth speaks.” Our words matter because they reveal our heart, we cannot separate words from character. Harsh words reveal harsh character, kind words reveal kind character; a message of pursuit and pleading reveals a character of love and desire; a message of frustration and impatience reveals a character of obligation and selfishness. This is why it’s so important that we understand that God has “committed to us the message of reconciliation”, He has asked us to tell our story by telling His, He has not asked us to strategically create a message, He has asked us to humbly trust His message, He has not asked us to be persuasive, charismatic or even convincing, He has asked us, called us, I would even say commanded us, to simply be faithful to the message which means, more than anything else, to be faithful to the character of the One the message belongs to. This morning what we will see is that the message of reconciliation, “Be reconciled to God”, is not just four simple words, it is supposed to be the heart behind all of our words. We will look at Jesus and Paul and then I pray that we will look at ourselves and see if our lives match the message we’ve been given, if our words reveal the character of the One who has reconciled us and to see if our hearts are full of the treasure of compassion.
