We wanted our second reading plan of 2013 to reflect where we currently are in our study of the Sermon on the Mount. Our calling, as those committed to living out the character of the Beatitudes, is to be the “salt of the earth” (those who effect change) and the “light of the world” (those who reveal Jesus as the truth). This reading plan is a compilation of men and women in the Bible that yielded their lives to the leading of the Holy Spirit and fulfilled this same purpose. We begin with Hebrews 11; the description of many included in “so great a cloud of witnesses”, those whose lives are defined by grace of God and their response of faith. After the examples in Hebrews 11, we will be reading the accounts of God’s work in the Old Testament prophets and then we will be reading the book of Acts; the truest example of the Body of Christ living out the calling of the Sermon on the Mount that we have been given. We close the reading plan by briefly reading about the lives of men and women who were so devoted to Jesus that their faith in Him caused Him to be moved with compassion and amazed in joy. Our prayer is that these few months will allow each of us to hear Jesus’ teaching, see Jesus’ example, and join in the cloud of witnesses that have obeyed Jesus’ command to follow Him, to love Him, and to become both the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
