The end of the book of Hebrews does not only finish the matter of Jesus’ supremacy it actually brings the letter full circle. The author began His letter by writing “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son  . . .” Chapter 12:25 brings this reality of Jesus speaking to an emphatic conclusion with these words, “See that you do not refuse Him who speaks.” The voice of God is our greatest gift, our greatest resource and our greatest responsibility. God’s incredible love and grace have been shown toward us in the way that He has constantly provided for our redemption and for a relationship of intimacy with Him. Just consider of what the Godhead has sacrificed for our salvation: The Father sacrificed by sending His Son to save us from sin and wrath; the Son sacrificed by leaving glory, becoming sin on our behalf, taking the wrath of God and defeating Satan, death and the grave; the Holy Spirit sacrificed  by willingly being sent by Jesus to dwell within broken and sinful man so that He could lead us into all truth. In all of these sacrifices there is one constant that never changes and that ties it all together, God’s voice. God spoke and all things were created. John told us that Jesus was the Word that was with God and that was God. The Holy Spirit is the voice that dwells within us bringing to remembrance all that Jesus has said and all that He will continue to say through His Word.

In 2:3 the author asked “How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” He went on to write, “After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard.” Even salvation is about God’s voice, it is spoken by Him and heard by those with ears to hear and hearts to receive. How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? How will we enter into salvation if we neglect the voice of Him who saves? I encourage and challenge you today, learn to treasure the voice of God. Seek His face, love His word and follow His Spirit. In His voice we have our greatest gift, our greatest resource and also our greatest responsibility.
